OUTREACH | EMPLOYMENT | COMMUNITY
One City PTBO is a seasonal program, in partnership with the Downtown Business Improvement Association (DBIA). We launched in 2018 as the community searched for creative ways to increase people's feeling of safety in the downtown core, while also supporting folks who were panhandling in the area.
In the first year, we were able to hire two outreach workers, and 13 community members who were responsible for cleaning the downtown. These staff were folks with barriers to traditional employment. Some struggled with homelessness, addictions, and marginalization.
In 2019, limited funding only allowed us to hire the outreach workers portion of One City. These workers spent their days checking in with local businesses, supporting individuals who were panhandling, and connecting people to supports in the city, including housing, food, medical care, employment counselling, and more!
We are excited to continue to run this program on a seasonal basis, and hope the employment portion of One City can return in the near future.
Thoughts from the community ...
“I haven’t worked in 10 years before now, so it’s really nice to find work. On our first shift we had at least six people thank us for what we were doing. That was really uplifting and really motivating.”
