Course Description
Homelessness itself is not a choice. Yet people who experience homelessness make choices all the time. Those choices are then understood in different ways by the public, sometimes in ways that criticize, question, weaponize, and/or minimize the choices and the right to choose by those experiencing homelessness. These common views and attitudes raise problems for thinking about how we should protect and promote autonomy and choice in the context of homelessness.
But what is autonomy, exactly? Generally, autonomy is understood as a capacity to be self-determining. Autonomy is the ability to make choices that are our own. We quickly see more questions arising, such as: Why should this capacity be protected? How can it be promoted effectively? How does being homeless impact someone’s autonomy, if at all?
